Credit Sequences- Drama

 Hello and welcome back everyone! Today I will be discussing about credit sequences. Credit sequences are an essential part of a film, showing all the production crew that participated in the creation of the film. Credit sequences can either be in the introduction or the ending so today I will talk about 3 credit sequences in film, both in the introduction and in the ending.

Saltburn

The film Saltburn is about a scholarship student at Oxford, who becomes obsessed with the wealthy a charismatic Felix Catton, leading to a summer filled with manipulation and tragic consequences. The opening scene of the film begins with a dialogue from the scholarship student from Oxford expressing his true feelings about Felix. The next scene begins with dramatic opera music playing the credits in the film and also visually showing the scholarship student walking around Oxford before entering the campus for the first time. This manner of showing the credit sequence is very engaging and also very helpful for the viewers to understand a little bit more about the future of what will happen once he gets settled at campus.

The Last of Us

The next film is called The Last of Us. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting where the main characters Joel and Ellie are struggling to navigate around without getting infected. The show's opening begins with instrumentals of a guitar and a violin, showing visuals of what is fungus or a virus spreading while introducing the main actors and producers before the film has even begun.

The Beekeeper

The last film is called The Beekeeper. The Beekeeper is about a man seeking vengeance for his friend's death from digital scammers. The film begins by introducing the history and the jobs of the bees, also comparing their movements to people walking on a busy street in a busy city. They also introduce the production team, matching the color of the font to the honey.

Three Film Openings

  Hello everyone and welcome back! In reference to my previous blog about the 2 genres, I had in mind to film, Today I will be going into about my chosen genre that I analyzed and a few examples of the genre along the way. As a reminder, the two film genres I suggested was drama and action.

My chosen genre for my film opening is drama. In the film industry, Drama has been known to be a genre that evokes a lot of human emotion and emotionally impact a person. It delves into the lives of characters and its conflicts. The background of the word "Drama" is derived from the Greek word 'dran', meaning 'to do' and 'act'. Drama is one of the biggest and most watched genres in the film industry.

Three examples of some major film openings from the genre "Drama" are...

 Inglorious Basters- 

Saving Private Ryan-  

The Dark Knight- 

The film opening from the movie Inglorious Basterds is known to be one of the best film openings in the film industry. The film opening begins with a man chopping wood on his property while his wife is washing clothes. Meanwhile they are working on the hard labor, they see a car driving towards them and realizes it is someone who is not an ally to them. This film opening helps introduce what will soon happen throughout the movie and why military man went to the worker’s home.

The next film opening is from the movie Saving Private Ryan. The film opening begins with a short clip of a blockade at a beach and a group of men on a small boat heading towards the shore. However, the next clip shows them embarking the boat and they are caught in an ambush and getting killed one by one by gunshots. This opening really helps explain the setting and soon the plot of the movie.

The last film opening is from the movie The Dark Knight. It starts off with a man walking down the street, walking towards a building with a clown mask in his hand. Later in the film, it shows a group of men with masks also going towards the building but towards the roof. The next clip shows the men raiding the facility, which is now introduced as a bank, and taking people hostage while robbing the money. Towards the end of the film, they show who the leader of the group is, introducing the main character to the audience before the climax of the film.

Portfolio Project Genre #2

    Hello and welcome back! Today I will be discussing about the second genre I am considering doing for my two- minute film opening. My first option of a genre for my film opening was a drama film; however, my second genre I will choose is action. 

Genre Conventions in an Action Film

Content

In an action film, there are many components that help piece the film together. For example, a strong, skillful protagonist, a compelling plot, and suspense help build up to the climax of the movie. These three examples are very important in establishing the background of what the film will be about and conform the plot of the whole film. A few other examples of what pieces an action film together is engaging music or stings and fast-pacing action such as fights, explosion and chases.

Techniques

Techniques are used heavily in action films such as camera and editing. Some camera techniques that are famously used in action films are tracking shots, handhelds, and Dutch angles. These kinds of techniques help build up to the climax of the film. Some editing techniques that were incorporated were cross cuttings and match cuts. These certain kinds of cuts help build up suspense. 

Examples

Some examples of some action films that incorporate these elements are Top Gun: Maverick and Mad Max.

Portfolio Project Genre #1

 One of the genres I have began thinking about doing a film opening about is a drama. I believe creating a dramatic film opening will strongly introduce the film before it is even played. An example of a drama film is the film Pride and Prejudice.

About the movie 

The movie Pride and Prejudice is a film, well-known for its romance and drama involved. The main character ,Elizabeth Bennet, is sworn to hate a man she believes will be the only man she will every marry in her life time, however, she begins to fall in love with him instead. The plot of the movie helps build the a suspense and mood, connecting to the main points of what a drama film is.

Elements included

Throughout the film, they heavily include mise-en-scene. For example, the character’s outfits are long fancy dressed and stylish suits, designed from the 1800’s, depicting that this time period is in the 1800’s. They also include soft lighting in multiple scenes to express a sense of warmth and love, matching the genre.Lastly, the film includes props such as horses carrying carriages, instead of cars, to demonstrate what the time period is and where it is located.

What I will incorporate 

In my film opening, I will incorporate multiple elements to create what is a drama film. Mise-en-scene is a major element I would include in my film opening, introducing the background and plot of what this film will somewhat be about. Another element I will incorporate would be establishing the setting. When establishing the setting I would use many angles like a high angle or low angle and even a Dutch angle to stir confusion.

Transition into my portfolio project

Hello! In today’s blog post, I will be explaining my transition from my previous work to my portfolio project. Today in class we learned about film openings and what should and shouldn’t be in it.  Up until now I have been building on the structure of what my portfolio project should include. To add on, I will be discussing my initial plans and approach to my project.

In reference to the discussing I had in class with film openings, we wrote down notes about the details in film openings. As a result, I decided what to include in my film opening. I will establish the background. Establishing a background in a two minute film opening is a really strong approach in order for the viewers to visualize what is happening. In establishing background, mise-en-scene plays a big role. The properties in mise-en-scene helps build up the background, puzzling the visualization of the opening.

Another approach I will be including is color schemes. In film openings, color schemes play a big role for visualization and meaning. For examples, colorful flowers in a dull scene, symbolizes a sign of hope or beauty. It also helps establish tone, depicting how it is being shown and in what manner.
